How it Works

Getting Items to Us
We offer the following options

  • Schedule a free pick-up with a RealReal concierge.

  • Drop off at one of our many locations.

  • Pack up and send items our way. The RealReal offers free shipping.

Meeting Our Experts
Free in-home or virtual appointments can be made with our experts to help our consignors learn more about the process of selling and the value of their items. Appointments are also available at our brick-and-mortar locations.

The Process

Once items are received, they are authenticated, photographed, priced and added to the member’s profile under his or her personal My Sales page. TRR members are able to check the status of their items in real time and receive alerts as their items progress through the acceptance process (usually between 10-15 days).

How We Price

Only The RealReal prices items to earn consignors the most. That’s because our prices are powered by the proprietary algorithm created by our team of data scientists. Together, they’re the brains and tech behind our prices. With the help of our merchants they take into account the resale market, site traffic, our members’ obsessions, search data, and similar items sold. All this info helps our pricing model get better every second of every day so we can earn you more every time you sell.

They also know what market conditions drive up demand: say for instance when Phoebe Philo exited Celine—our merchants made sure this industry shift was reflected in our pricing. All this data helps our pricing model get better every second of every day, so we can earn you more every time you sell.

Our pricing may provide members with the actual retail cost of a new version of a particular item at any given moment. For example: A Louis Vuitton monogram weekend Keepall is listed at $1,025 on TRR; alongside this the current price of a new Louis Vuitton monogram weekend Keepall ($1,490) is also provided for reference.

Four Key Factors of Pricing

Demand
Trends and market shifts can affect the value of certain items. For example: Gucci is having a moment or Phoebe Philo exits Céline.

Season
Items from current or recent collections are often in highest demand. Seasonless brand classics like the Manolo Blahnik Carolyne slingback also enjoy steady demand.

Condition
TRR uses the following standards to gauge the condition of items submitted for resale: Pristine, Excellent, Very Good, Good. The better the condition of the item, the higher its resale value tends to be.

Color
Color has an impact on pricing. For example, a black Chanel Flap Bag has a higher resale value than the same bag in brown. Seasonal color trends (pink, neon, and so on) can also dramatically affect resale value.

Commission
The more our Members sell, the higher commission they earn. Most TRR Members are able to earn their way up to 70% commission, with some items commanding as much as 85%. Fun fact: our top consignors earn an average of $9000 a year with TRR.

Select items can be sold to TRR upfront for immediate payout. These tend to include certain brands and models of watches and fine jewelry.

Consignor Demographics

Here are a few things we know about the members who sell with us:

Household Income
Consignor household income tends to be higher than that of TRR shoppers; typically around 40% of new consignors have a household income of more than $150K versus 20% for new buyers.

Age
While more than a third of new consignors and buyers are between the ages of 18-34, new consignors tend to skew a bit older: about 50% are older than 45, whereas only 45% of new buyers are over the age of 45.

Gender
Consignors are also more likely to be women than men. 80% of consignors and 75% of buyers are women.

Consignor Profiles

Buyer (Not Consignor)
This member already has a relationship with TRR and has developed a level of trust. It may not have occurred to this person to sell with TRR or perhaps they are unclear how the process works.

First Time Consignor
This member is ready to take the plunge but may need some clarification, hand-holding, encouragement or validation.

Lapsed
This member has previous experience selling with TRR but has not done so in a while. This member may feel they have nothing of value to sell at this time. Or maybe they have just been busy doing other things.

Repeat
The repeat consignor already has a strong relationship and degree of trust with TRR. They understand that TRR is a smart way to turn over their wardrobe seasonally, to get more out of investments, and to get rid of things they no longer want to make room for new things they have their eye on.
